why create a Visioning Workshop
What is it that makes a space stand out? How does space impart messages about the culture, values, and the type of work that is being done at the company? Immediate impressions provide a telling story about a team. When a visitor walks into a space, there are clues all around them; some are reflected in the physical aesthetics and layout, while others are more intuitive messages. NxT studio’s visioning workshop helps the collective design team identify these spatial cues and design goals. It is a key step at the beginning of the design process that helps us understand our client, but at the same time helps the client grapple with identifying its own culture, team relationships and aspirations.
The visioning workshop provides the opportunity to gather an organization’s key leadership and decision makers to explore their design goals, culture, values, program requirements, and determine the guiding principles for the project. This is a pivotal point in the design process for evaluating a client’s appetite for change: change in work process, change in workplace standards, and change in culture. This is the client’s opportunity to make their voice heard to their colleagues as well.
Defining the vision:
Economic drivers; Identifying the business drivers, project economic goals, and strategic direction of the organization, along with possibilities for growth, will allow the team to create the conditions for meeting those goals.
Culture; Not only is it necessary to discuss the current existing conditions of the office, but also more importantly, exploring what type of office do you want to be in the future. How do you wish your office to appear in recruiting and retaining talent? What do you care about? What are your priorities? A client’s culture will ultimately be reflected through the architectural design.
Technological advances; Technology has been a major influence on processes, behavior, and work flow of all organizations. It is our experience, particularly with millennial workers, the quality of technology and ease of use is as important as the size or distinction of their workspace.
Demographics; In today’s multi-generational and multi-cultural workforce, the work environment must address a multitude of requirements. Work space must be flexible for multiple use, allowing a neighborhood feeling and collaboration, but also provide quality space for heads-down focus oriented activities.
Sustainability goals; The vision workshop is critical for flushing out a project’s sustainable goals ranging from basic good stewardship to stringent cradle to cradle design parameters and/or LEED certification.
Design Goals; The key design goals are often first discussed during the visioning workshop. Specifically, the team will be asked to define 5 key design goals that NxT studio must accomplish to be a successful design project.
Keys to a successful visioning workshop:
Assemble all key players in the room at one time; Like-minded and opposing opinions provide valuable insight to the decision-making process. A safe healthy active dialogue is significant to uncovering key elements important to the organization and necessary for a successful design project.
Create an atmosphere that encourages casual relaxed interaction; It is important to make the visioning workshop as interactive and comfortable as possible. What helps participants feel engaged? For one, the room should be preferably away from their daily work space/duties. Everyone should be able to move around as they choose. The goal is to create a casual atmosphere; it’s a conversation, not a presentation.
Documentation; Documenting the session and taking note of key observations, goals, and decisions on a large paper banner is a creative and playful visual tool that helps spur interest and dialogue. Participants will see their comments and decision points being documented real-time through our innovative cartooning process.
Bring examples: Everyone is encouraged to bring vibe images of interesting interior design that they may wish to discuss. NxT studio can also set up a Pinterest site for participants to upload images prior to the workshop.
